From an octopus lunging at a videographer that stopped our hearts, to a dog being returned for a third time, this week’s headlines left us speechless with the unusual and upsetting scenarios.

But brightening our week was the video and picture submissions from Newsweek readers of their pets.

Think your pet deserves to be featured? Find out at the end of the article how to submit your furry friend.

Winner

An 8-year-old rescue dog, Lily, earned the title of this week’s Pet of the Week thanks to the hilarious game she started playing by herself.

Owner Katina Kefalos told Newsweek that she randomly spotted her Yorkie running around the living room with the dog bed over her head for the first time. Confused, Kefalos stepped closer, but Lily paused. She didn’t want anyone to take the game away from her.

Once Kefalos backed away, her dog put herself under the bed and started running around again. She’s only noticed Lily playing this adorable game one other time.

“It’s hysterical,” Kefalos said. “It’s the cutest thing I’ve seen her do.”

Finalists

Our first finalist for this week is a rescue dog from Sacramento named Rip, whose owner, Leslie Garner, calls “so weird and funny.”

Rip constantly has his tongue sticking halfway out, from walking around to sleeping, Garner told Newsweek. Add in his “crazy hair,” then you get a glimpse into his fun personality.

“My favorite thing is how sweet he is, and he always smells people’s faces,” Garner said. “Not to pick, but he smells your eyes and mouth. Weird!”

An investigative cat comes in as our next finalist.

Chupah was rescued by Nora Calnek van Woerkens, along with his two siblings, at an animal shelter in Curacao after the family’s cat of 21 years passed.

“Instead of waiting a few months, we decided to go look at kittens in the shelter,” she told Newsweek. “Chupah was the first to climb over the 2-meter-high fence with a small opening at the top to jump into our arms.”

His curiosity made them fall in love. The picture shows him investigating a printer by sticking his paws in the slot.

The family also adopted Chupah’s two siblings, which they “never regretted.” They only wish they could have taken all nine kittens into their home.

Last, but certainly not least, we have a Chihuahua named Rosita and her siblings, another Chihuahua named Jazzi, and Shikana, a Siamese seal point cat.

Chihuahuas have a reputation for not bonding with other pets. However, in owner Coralie Richmond’s experience, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Rosita made it her responsibility to look after the other pets.

The photos show Rosita getting cozy with both Jazzi and Shikana, cuddling with them. They’re all her “special” pets, but Richmond’s heart warms seeing how protective Rosita becomes of her siblings.

If you think your pet could be next week’s Newsweek “Pet of the Week,” send us your funny and heartwarming videos and pictures of your pet, along with a bit about them, to [email protected], and they could appear in our “Pet of the Week” lineup.
