Tarleton was picked to win the UAC in the preseason poll, receiving eight of the nine first-place votes, with the only other first-place vote going to Abilene Christian. Victor Gabalis was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Additionally, offensive lineman Hunter Smith, defensive lineman Brandon Tolvert, linebacker Ty Rawls, and defensive back Kayus Kurns are on the preseason All-Conference team.
Last season, the Texans finished 10-4. The team defeated Drake 43-29 in the first round of the playoffs before losing 42-31 to South Dakota in the second round.
Portland State was picked to finish just 10th this season in the Big Sky. Tight end Tanner Beaman and defensive back Isaiah Green are the only preseason All-Conference picks for the team.
The Vikings went 3-8 last season. Head coach Bruce Barnum is back this year, but has made changes to his staff, with Matt Leunen taking over as offensive coordinator and Bryant Thomas taking over as defensive coordinator.
