Diego Borella, an assistant director on Emily in Paris, has died after collapsing on the set of the Netflix show in Venice, Italy.
Filming temporarily suspended after the Italian crew member was pronounced dead at around 7pm on Thursday after he collapsed during preparation for a final scene being shot at Hotel Danieli, according to multiple local outlets.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family,” a Paramount Television Studios spokesperson said in a statement to People. “Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
The show’s medical staff attempted to treat Borella, but he died at the scene, likely of “a sudden heart attack,” according to La Repubblica.
Production resumed Saturday on Emily in Paris, after Netflix renewed the show for Season 5 last September, with series creator Darren Star previously teasing the partially Rome-set season to Deadline.
“I think we’ve got a really terrific season coming up,” said Star last month. “We filmed in Rome for the first four weeks, and that was an exciting experience to be there. Now we’re back in Paris, Emily is definitely back in Paris.”
