The Toronto Blue Jays came into last offseason with a few big decisions on their plate. The biggest decisions had to do with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette’s contracts, as both were entering their final year on their deal this season.
Guerrero was signed to a massive extension, but the Blue Jays opted against signing Bichette to a long-term deal, considering how poorly he played in 2024.
But Bichette has since dominated the big leagues with Toronto this season and raised his free agency value by quite a bit. He’s raised his value so much that the Blue Jays might not be able to afford a reunion.
MLB’s Mark Feinsand recently listed the Detroit Tigers as a free agency fit for Bichette in the coming months.
“After leading the AL in hits in 2021 and ’22 and making his second career All-Star team in 2023, Bichette had a nightmarish 2024, playing in only 81 games — and unproductive ones, at that,” Feinsand wrote. “This year, Bichette has looked like his old self, once again leading the American League in hits while hitting 16 homers with 82 RBIs and an .805 OPS in 125 games. The shortstop market will be thin this winter, putting Bichette in position to score big in his first foray into free agency.”
The Tigers could be an intriguing landing spot for Bichette, but he would likely need to change positions. The Tigers have top prospect Kevin McGonigle destroying the minor leagues. He looks to be the team’s shortstop of the future, and Detroit may not want to change his position.
But if McGonigle or Bichette is open to playing second base or third base, this fit could make quite a bit of sense as Detroit looks to build a dynasty.
