A video released by Iranian state media showed Iran’s armed forces test-firing cruise missiles in the Gulf of Oman and northern Indian Ocean, striking surface targets during large-scale drills.

The display was presented as a demonstration of military readiness at a time of heightened tension with Israel and the United States following June’s brief but deadly war.

Newsweek has reached out to Iran’s Foreign Ministry for comment.

Why It Matters

The footage adds to a growing climate of military posturing in the Middle East. Both Iran and Israel emerged from June’s 12-day war claiming victory, but their rhetoric since the U.S.-brokered ceasefire has grown increasingly belligerent. By broadcasting the missile tests, Iran is signaling its determination to deter future strikes while showcasing its weapons to both domestic and international audiences.

What to Know

The two day exercises, called Sustainable Power 1404, concluded on Friday and featured the coordinated use of Nasir, Qadir, and Ghader anti-ship cruise missiles launched from coastal batteries and warships, including the Genaveh missile boat and the Sabalan destroyer. According to state media, the systems—described as radar-evading and highly precise—successfully struck their designated targets.

Missile Upgrades

Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, said Iran’s security relied on constant upgrades across land, sea, air, and cyber capabilities. On Wednesday, Iran’s defense minister announced a new generation of missiles, claiming they outmatch those used in June. He warned that if Israel launches another attack, the improved arsenal will be deployed.

Warnings of Renewed Conflict

Meanwhile, Yahya Rahim Safavi, a top military adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, dismissed the current ceasefire as only a pause, saying Iran remained in a “stage of war.” He urged continued expansion of missile, drone, and cyber capabilities to ensure the nation would not be “trampled.” In contrast, Israel’s military chief, Eyal Zamir framed the conflict with Iran as a preemptive strike and warned that his forces were prepared to act again.

12-Day War

The 12-day war erupted on June 13 with surprise Israeli strikes that killed Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists. On June 22, U.S. warplanes joined the campaign, striking Iran’s nuclear sites. Iran retaliated by launching missile and drone attacks on Israel, and also fired missiles at a U.S. air base in Qatar. The conflict ended on June 24 after Washington brokered a ceasefire, though tensions remain high.

What People Are Saying

Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi: “The only way to shield the country from threats is to enhance deterrence and modernize our ground, naval, aerospace, air defense, cyber and electronic warfare capabilities.”

Israel’s Military Chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir: “Iran and its axis remain in our sights. The campaign against Iran is not over,”

What Happens Next

The release of missile test footage underscores Tehran’s intent to project deterrence while its leaders openly predict further conflict. The risk of renewed confrontation remains high, raising fears of another regional escalation.
