The Los Angeles Dodgers are one of the best teams in baseball, but injuries have kept them from separating themselves at the top of the league.
For most of the season, the Dodgers’ pitching staff was destroyed with injuries, but with each passing week, they’re getting healthier. Although it’s not at full strength yet, the starting rotation is as loaded as any rotation in baseball, and the bullpen is set to follow suit.
According to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya, the Dodgers will activate closer Tanner Scott on Friday and expect to activate reliever Kirby Yates on Saturday. Scott and Yates were two of the better closers in baseball last season, but they’ve been riddled with injuries this year.
Scott hasn’t been as dominant as he was the last two seasons, but when healthy, he’s still a very good left-handed reliever for the backend of games. At worst, he’s the eighth-inning arm for a closer like Blake Treinen.
Yates is in the same boat as Scott. He hasn’t repeated his incredible dominance from a year ago, but he’s still been reliable in late-inning situations. Either way, he’s going to be leaned on down the stretch.
This couldn’t come at a better time for Los Angeles, either, as it is locked into a heated National League West division battle with the rival San Diego Padres.
The Dodgers hold a small lead over the Padres as of Thursday. Getting these two star relievers back will be the boost that they need down the stretch.
