Two Southern California men have been charged in a fatal car-to-car shooting in Diamond Bar just over two years ago.
Richard Pedroza, 28, of Alhambra and Daniel Rios, 26, of La Habra face the following charges:
- One count of murder with special circumstances
- Two counts of attempted murder.
- Possession of a firearm by a felon, one count for Pedroza and two counts for Rios
“The charges include several allegations including that the crimes involved great violence, great bodily harm, the threat of great bodily harm, and other acts showing a high degree of cruelty, viciousness, and callousness,” the Los Angeles County District Attorneys’ Office said in a news release announcing the charges.
At about midnight on Aug. 1, 2023, the pair allegedly opened fire from their vehicle toward other vehicles on the southbound 57 Freeway near Pathfinder Road.
The District Attorney’s Office initially said the shooting occurred on Aug. 1, 2025, before correcting their release.
Three people were shot at, prosecutors say, one of whom was killed and another who was seriously wounded in the leg. The third person was uninjured.
Pedroza and Rios were arrested by the U.S. Marshals on Tuesday.
“If you think you can turn our freeways into shooting galleries and terrorize our communities with callous violence, think again,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. “This reckless attack cost one man his life and left another injured. Innocent people simply traveling the freeway, just trying to get to their destination, could easily have been caught in the crossfire and killed.”
The men are being held without bail at the Men’s Central Jail, and they’re due to appear in Pomona Superior Court on Sept. 12.
If convicted on all charges, they face life in prison.
