The Pittsburgh Steelers are nearly finished with their preseason showdowns and the team has a very strong unit that could require a major decision. With Aaron Rodgers, the team has a strong starting quarterback who can lead them back to the playoffs.

Rodgers isn’t the only talented quarterback on the roster, as Mason Rudolph has shaped up to be a solid backup for Rodgers, should anything force him out of action. However, the Steelers may have unearthed a star in Skylar Thompson.

Thompson played for the Miami Dolphins in his first two seasons and was forced into action when Tua Tagovailoa was injured. The young passer did the best he could, but the team’s shaky offensive line may have severely diminished his actual skill set.

Thompson has emerged as a massive preseason star, throwing 346 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in limited time. In each preseason game, he has secured over 100 passing yards and has shown some incredible poise in the pocket.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has confirmed that Rudolph has all but secured the backup quarterback position, but where does that leave Thompson?

Though the upcoming third-year signal caller had some rough sledding during his time with the Dolphins, Thompson is playing himself right into a better opportunity. In a perfect world, the Steelers will keep him on the roster as the third emergency quarterback.

Thompson has earned a bigger role elsewhere, and his play through training camp and preseason could lead the Steelers to land some draft capital for trading him. There will be plenty of teams that are looking to bolster their rosters, especially regarding the backup quarterback situation.

Though there is no guarantee, expect Thompson to potentially be on a new team by Week 1 of the regular season. He has sure showcased enough in preseason to prove that he may have turned a corner.

That does not mean he is a starting-caliber quarterback, but he could be.
