A large sting operation earlier this week resulted in a sidewalk lined with handcuffed drivers suspected of illegal street racing in Carson, authorities confirmed Thursday.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, deputies arrested at least 64 suspects and towed 25 vehicles involved in an illegal street takeover on Sunday, Aug. 17.
It took place in the area of Avalon Boulevard and Gardena Avenue, a large intersection covered in burnout marks and acceleration scuffs, according to a recent Google Maps view.
“Illegal street racing and reckless vehicle exhibitions are not only unlawful, but they are also deadly,” warned LASD in a release. “These disruptive activities endanger everyone who shares our roads, and the City of Carson, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, is intensifying enforcement to stop them.”
Authorities said that in total, the Aug. 17 operation concluded with the following numbers:
- 64 arrests for street takeover spectating, including:
- 1 driver arrested for reckless driving,
- 1 felony warrant arrest for narcotics sales,
- 1 DUI arrest,
- 1 Nitrous Oxide arrest,
- 25 vehicles towed,
- 2 vehicles impounded for 30 days,
- and 8 traffic citations issued.
None of the suspects were named, and no injuries were reported as a result of this operation.
LASD said it hopes this incident will send a clear message to prospective racers that the consequences of engaging in illegal street racing are serious and will be strictly enforced.
“Street takeovers are not entertainment—they are dangerous, criminal behavior,” said Carson Station Captain Alise Norman. “Our roads belong to the community, and we will hold individuals accountable for their actions. That includes not only the drivers, but also the spectators who enable and encourage these illegal activities that threaten the safety of our residents.”
The public is asked to report any street racing or takeover activity by calling LASD Carson Station at 310-830-1123 or dialing 911 in an emergency.
