Brewers Manager Gives Characteristically Blunt Response to Rookie’s Bad Start

A third straight loss has stirred up quite a bit of emotion from the Milwaukee Brewers.

A 4-3 loss on Wednesday to the division rival Chicago Cubs was just the second time all season that Milwaukee has lost three straight games. After the game, manager Pat Murphy was asked his thoughts about Jacob Misiorowski’s start, and his answer was rather harsh.

“That’s not good enough. He lost his, whatever you want to call it, focus. That’s not good enough,” Murphy told reporters, via Brewers reporter Hunter Baumgardt.

After two strong innings, Misiorowski’s outing fell apart in the third inning. He walked the trio of Owen Caissie, Dansby Swanson and finally Matt Shaw to load the bases for Chicago. The walk to Shaw was after a 12-pitch at-bat that saw Shaw foul off seven pitches before earning the walk.

After Shaw, it was first baseman Michael Busch that stepped up and lined a double into left-center field, clearing the bases and giving the Cubs a 3-1 lead.

Misiorowski was able to prevent further damage after the double from Busch and pitched the fourth inning before being pulled from the game.

He finished with a final line of four innings, one hit, three runs, three walks and five strikeouts. Even though he allowed just one hit, it came in a key moment of the game, and it put the Brewers in a hole they could not quite come out of.

After a 2.70 ERA in his first seven career starts, Misiorowski’s ERA has skyrocketed to 4.19 after his two most recent outings.

In his previous start before Wednesday, Misiorowski lasted just 1 1/3 innings against the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed four hits, five runs, three walks and struck out three. Combine that with Wednesday and his last two starts have combined for 5 1/3 innings, five hits, eight runs, six walks and eight strikeouts.

While not much can be expected from a rookie with nine career starts, the Brewers will certainly need Misiorowski to clean things up if he wants to be a trusted pitcher for Murphy when the postseason rolls around.
