FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — The University of North Alabama kicked off the first day of classes with its annual ‘Lucky Dip’ event at Harrison Fountain.
The Lucky Dip is a yearly tradition to kick off the first day of classes at UNA.
Gibson Horner, a junior at UNA, says he loves the tradition at his school.
“I really take pride in our traditions on campus. It brings everyone together and makes UNA feel like home,” Horner said.
And for Journey Rhodes, a sophomore this year, the Lucky Dip brought a smile to her face.
“It brings absolutely good luck to everybody, it would bring a good tradition to the campus, and it just brings joy to everyone,” Rhodes said.
The Lucky Dip is exactly what it sounds like: students grab a pencil and dip into the iconic fountain in the heart of campus.
Elisa Wellerick, a junior, told News 19 she looks forward to the event every year.
“I come every year, and I love it. It’s my favorite event on campus,” Wellerick said.
Taking part in this tradition is supposed to give students good luck for their school year.
“It does, it really does, all of my semesters have been great so far, so I cannot complain,” Wellerick said.
Michelle Eubanks, the spokesperson for UNA, says this year’s Lucky Dip was vibrant and there was a lot of excitement in the air.
“This year they seem very ready to be here, they seem excited to be here, so that makes us all energized for a wonderful semester and a wonderful academic year, the luck is supposed to hold you through the spring,” Eubanks said.
Over 1,000 pencils were dipped by students as they head into their fall semester.
