The Pittsburgh Steelers know who will be playing quarterback for them in 2025: future Hall-of-Famer Aaron Rodgers. Beyond that, though, is anyone’s guess.

This could very well be Rodgers’ last season in the NFL, even if he enjoys a terrific year. And even if it isn’t, the Steelers need to find a long-term solution behind him.

Pittsburgh did select Will Howard in the sixth round of the draft this past April, but it seems hard to imagine he will be the Steelers’ answer over the long haul. So perhaps Mike Tomlin’s club can find its man in next year’s NFL Draft?

ESPN’s Field Yates recently published his latest 2026 mock draft, and he does have Pittsburgh nabbing a signal-caller with the 16th overall pick: LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier.

“Nussmeier — the son of Saints offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier — is like a point guard on the field, playing with elite processing skills and very good accuracy,” Yates wrote. “He lacks dynamic athleticism and has just solid arm strength, but he is still able to deliver the ball on time and to spots where his receivers can create after the catch.”

Nussmeier is a bit of a polarizing prospect. He doesn’t appear to be elite in any one particular category, and in a modern NFL where athleticism and escapability is key, Nussmeier seems like a bit of a dinosaur.

Not only that, but the 23-year-old led the SEC with 12 interceptions last season, so turnovers are something that he absolutely needs to harness.

Nussmeier did throw for an impressive 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2024, completing a modest 64.2 percent of his passes. Decent numbers for sure, but there is no doubt that there is reason to be concerned about his NFL future.

There will surely be plenty of impressive signal-callers available in next spring’s draft, so the Steelers should be able to find an answer. But Nussmeier may not be the safest pick for the club.
