HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — It’s been more than a month since family and friends of Lazarus Howard III have heard from him.
Huntsville Police have been working to learn more details, but they say they’ve hit somewhat of a standstill in the Huntsville-Madison County area.
“We’ve reached a point where we need to expand our reach into the Selma and Central Alabama area because we know from talking to family that he’s from Selma, and he may have returned there,” said Sgt. Chris Jackson. “We’re hoping we can speak with people that are in that area.”
He was reported missing by his mother on July 19.
Now, police are sharing new insight into Howard’s last known conversation on July 11.
“It was a good friend of his, and there was nothing suspicious of their conversation in any way,” he said. “He was just going to hang out with some other friends and quickly got off the phone.”
Police said there is no current evidence indicating he is in danger.
“Missing persons are very complex cases because they don’t actually start out as criminal in nature, and then as you’re investigating them, you may find elements or things that suggest it, but in this case, everything’s still on the table,” he said.
Although he said it’s concerning to them that he left his pet cat unattended.
“It appears that he hasn’t come to see his cat, so we find all those elements concerning,” he said. “But in order for someone to be labeled as endangered, we have to have actual physical evidence that indicates that they are in nature.”
Police said he is well-known in the Huntsville and Selma areas, and they are asking the public to step forward with any information they can.
Sgt. Jackson also said Huntsville Police have visited his residence multiple times over the past month, and there is no evidence showing signs of him returning home.
