Family members have identified the man who was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking in South Los Angeles over the weekend.

Reports of a gunshot wound victim came into the Los Angeles Police Department dispatch around 9:20 p.m. Saturday in an alley near the 8000 block of South Hooper Avenue, according to a department spokesperson.

The preliminary investigation into the incident revealed that the two victims were alerted to a car alarm coming from the alley, and when they arrived, they found three suspects trying to steal their vehicle. Upon confronting them, the two men were shot by a fourth suspect who had been standing at the south entrance to the alley, LAPD said.

Arriving officers found the two men who had been shot and transported one to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. The other man, however, was pronounced dead at the scene.

While authorities did not immediately identify either victim by name, family members of the decedent tell KTLA it was a man named Johnny Marquez.

Marquez, according to relatives, was protecting his family during the carjacking when he was killed. Speaking to KTLA, Marquez’s niece Cynthia identified the other victim as Johnny’s son, who is said to be recovering.

In addition, Marquez leaves behind a wife and three daughters.

“Our family member, Johnny Marquez, was shot and killed while trying to protect his family from a carjacking that turned fatal. He was the sole breadwinner and provider for his 3 daughters, son, and wife,” a GoFundMe started by the family to help with costs associated with Marquez’s death reads. “He was a kind hearted person, that was always willing to help anyone, and believed in peace and harmony. He never had any issues with anyone, he was full of love and loved by many.”

No further details surrounding the investigation into the shooting have been released.
