The Denver Broncos have beefed up what was already a stingy defense this offseason, adding pieces like Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw in free agency and selecting Jahdae Barron in the NFL Draft.
It’s also entirely possible the Broncos are not making additions, especially with NFL cutdown day looming on Aug. 26.

There could be some very intriguing players that could be cut between now and then, and that includes Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Shilo Sanders.
The son of Deion Sanders, Shilo went undrafted this past April but was ultimately picked up by the Buccaneers in free agency.
Sanders began his collegiate career at South Carolina in 2019 and spent two seasons with the Gamecocks before transferring to Jackson State to play for his father in 2021 and 2022. Then, after Deion made the move to coach Colorado in 2023, Shilo followed him over there.
Sanders enjoyed a couple of solid seasons with the Buffaloes, most recently registering 67 tackles, a sack, a force fumble and a couple of fumble recoveries during the 2024 campaign.
The 25-year-old is not the greatest in man coverage, but he does bring some intriguing skills to the table, most notably in his tackling ability. A notorious hard hitter, Sanders could provide significant help as a run defender, and he may also be able to offer assistance on special teams.
The Broncos already have quite a few safeties that have established themselves as key rotational pieces, but a little bit more depth never hurt, and Sanders may just be able to carve out a role for Denver.
Not only that, but he literally just spent two years playing for Colorado, so it’s not like he would have to go very far, as some have already noted in pitching the Broncos as a potential destination for the youngster.
Sanders also may be able to feature as a nickelback in certain sets, and he does have experience playing in the slot. It’s also important to remember that when he began playing college football with South Carolina, he was a cornerback.
Over time, it became increasingly obvious that Sanders was more of a safety, but he does bring some versatility to the table. And while Sean Payton has historically been more of an offensive-minded coach, he is no stranger to deploying physical defenses. Sanders would fit right in.

Would Sanders actually be able to make the Broncos’ 53-man roster? Well, it depends on how many safeties they decide to keep, but he does have the talent to play somewhere in the NFL. Worst-case scenario, perhaps Denver could add him to its practice squad.
Of course, this is all assuming that the Buccaneers actually release Sanders, and given the wave of injuries that has befallen their secondary, that is no sure thing.
