Cardinals Urged To Cut Ties With Electric 23-Year-Old Former Top Prospect

The St. Louis Cardinals have a lot of big decisions to make in the offseason. Fortunately for them, they’ll be under new leadership as Chaim Bloom takes over John Mozeliak’s job as the president of baseball operations.

Under Bloom, the Cardinals could get very aggressive during the winter months.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently urged the Cardinals to move on from former top prospect Jordan Walker in the offseason despite the fact that he’s still just 23 years old.

“A 16-26 run since June 30 has turned this into yet another lost year for the Cardinals. Up next is a transition to a Chaim Bloom-led front office, and you can rest assured there will be major shakeups to the roster as well,” Rymer wrote. “Among other things, it’ll be time to admit Walker just isn’t going to break through in St. Louis. The erstwhile top prospect has had ample opportunities to do so, but his .582 OPS in August is merely the latest case of him digging his hole deeper.”

Walker is only 23 years old. While he’s been horrible at the big league level for quite some time now, there are top prospects around baseball who haven’t debuted in the big leagues who are older than Walker.

Cutting ties with him right now doesn’t make sense unless there’s a team in baseball that still values him like a top 100 prospect in baseball. That’s unlikely at this point, so the Cardinals are much better off trying to help him develop as a player, even if it comes in the minor leagues for a year.

The Cardinals aren’t going to be under as much pressure to win next season, as they’re expected to rebuild, so Walker won’t have as much pressure on his shoulders either.
