The Bear star Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle have been set to make their Broadway debuts next spring in Proof, the first New York revival of David Auburn’s Pulitzer- and Tony-winning play.
Thomas Kail will direct the revival, which was announced Wednesday. It is scheduled to play a limited engagement at a Shubert theatre to be determined with previews beginning March 31, 2026 ahead of opening night April 16. Kail and Mike Bosner are producers.
Proof had its world premiere Off Broadway in 2000 and scored six Tony nominations after its Broadway transfer, winning three including for Best Play and Best Actress in a Play for its star Mary-Louise Parker. She played Catherine, a mathematical genius who fears she will struggle with mental illness just as did her father, also a mathematical genius, before his death. The story also involves her father’s graduate student who becomes entwined with Catherine as the authenticity of a potentially groundbreaking proof found in her father’s papers is questioned.
Auburn adapted the play into a script that became a 2005 movie directed by David Madden starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Edebiri, who has been nominated for three Emmys for playing Sydney on FX’s The Bear, is next up starring in Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt. Along with an extensive filmography, Cheadle, nominated for an Oscar for 2005’s Hotel Rwanda, starred in the Public Theater’s 2001 production of Suzan-Lori Parks’ Topdog/Underdog and has appeared Off Broadway. This will be the Broadway debut for both.
Organizers said the Proof creative team will include Oscar winner Kris Bowers (original music), Teresa L. Williams (scenic design), Dede Ayite (costume design), Amanda Zieve (lighting design) and Daniel Swee (casting director), with more names to be announced.
