The Toronto Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates got into a benches-clearing incident on Monday night after Tommy Pham flipped his bat at home plate after a walk.
Pham turned around and said something to catcher Tyler Heineman on the way to first base that led to an exchange of words and the dugouts emptying.
After the game, Heineman noted that the whole ordeal was “unprovoked” and that he “barely knew” who Pham was, according to MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson.
Pham did not like those comments from Heineman, as he replied to a post on X, outlining Heineman’s thoughts, with some harsh words for the catcher.
“(Expletive) about a ball not being called a strike to the umpire when it’s clearly below the zone and away is disrespectful not only to the umpire but the hitter as well so like I said when I flipped the bat (expletive) him (Keegan Matheson) dude has two years in the show I know the zone.”
Pham has often found himself in situations like this. It’s not the first time he has led to a benches-clearing incident. However, it is odd seeing an incident like Monday’s when nobody was hit.
Pham walked on four pitches but apparently did not like Heineman complaining to the umpire about a close pitch earlier in the at-bat.
It won’t be difficult for the Blue Jays to get over the incident. They have one of the best records in baseball, while the Pirates have been out of contention for months.
