MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WHNT) — Whether you’re buying groceries or calling a ride, gig workers show up when you need them most. And now, these app-based freelancers can get health insurance and other benefits.
Shipt, the Alabama-based grocery shopping company, announced a new program for workers. This comes as a new law takes effect in October, making the program a reality for companies in the state.
People who work for Shipt can get benefits if they make $750 in a qualifying period. The company will give 4 percent of a shopper’s total earnings that can be used, as needed. That could be for a retirement plan, health coverage, or even childcare.
“That is very meaningful in itself,” said Mindy Reher, vice president of experiential operations for Shipt. “That, not only can they earn these benefits, but they can tailor them.”
Reher said those earnings are tax-deductible.
“This really allows us to be able to offer our thousands of shoppers across the state access to these benefits without compromising on flexibility, and independence,” she remarked.
Shipt is the first company in Alabama to offer that flexibility and independence. Rep. Neil Rafferty (D-Birmingham) expects more companies to take advantage of the new law. “This is a big one to help them uplift themselves, their families, as well as our communities, and really help Alabama’s working families out,” he said.
Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) said more and more people will choose to work as contractors. “We want to facilitate work in Alabama,” he explained. “Even if it’s a part-time gig, you know.”
Rep. Rafferty said, “we recognize that work is changing. And that, if we do not adapt, people will be left behind.”
The law making portable benefits official will go into effect on October 1. Rep. Rafferty urges all app-based workers to contact their company and see what they are willing to bring to the table.
