A new era of New York Jets football seems to be on the horizon.
In search of their first playoff appearance since 2010, New York’s front office will make any changes necessary to help its team get there. That could mean the release of last season’s third-round pick, wide receiver Malachi Corley.
Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport listed Corley as the one player that the Jets should release prior to their season opener next month.
“Corley was essentially invisible for the Jets as a rookie — three catches for 16 yards in 83 snaps and a would-be touchdown run that became a turnover when dropped the ball to celebrate before crossing the goal line,” Davenport wrote.
Davenport went on to discuss that Corley’s recent action with the third stringers in New York’s recent preseason game could be the writing on the wall for Corley’s time with the Jets.
“In the first preseason game, Corley was out there with third stringers. But rather than blow by a bunch of scrubs, he caught just one pass. He’s playing his way right off the Gang Green roster,” he wrote.
Corley had a stellar career at Western Kentucky, racking up 259 catches for 3,035 yards and 29 touchdowns in four seasons. His excellent numbers helped him fly up draft boards and become a Day 2 pick in last season’s draft.
As a rookie OC, there are bound to be plenty of questions about how good Tanner Engsrand can be for the @nyjets.One way to answer that in a hurry? Get this guy going ASAP. Malachi Corley can play. pic.twitter.com/ToCplgpmvk

Fast forward just over a year later and Corley may now have just one final week on the Jets roster before he is potentially released.
The good news for him, is it will be very likely that multiple teams will be willing to take a chance on a third-round pick from just one season ago. A release from New York should certainly not be the end of Corley’s NFL career.
