Billy Napier and the Florida Gators are looking to get back to being a legitimate national championship contender. It has been quite some time since the proud program was playing at that level.

Over the last four years, the Gators have not found much success.

In 2021 under Dan Mullen, Florida went 6-7, then they went 6-7 under Napier in 2022, 5-7 in 2023, and 8-5 in 2024. Last season showed signs of life, but there are still a lot of questions surrounding the Gators entering the upcoming 2025 season.

One of those question has to do with the health of standout sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway.

Lagway was viewed as the potential savior of the Florida football program when he committed to the school. He was an elite five-star recruit hailing from Willis, Texas in the 2024 class and was ranked as the No. 1 quarterback and the No. 3 overall player in the nation by 247 Sports.

During his freshman season with the Gators, Lagway played in 12 total games. He completed 59.9 percent of his pass attempts for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, while also running for 101 yards.

That being said, a shoulder injury forced him to miss most of spring ball. With the season right around the corner, a new update has been provided about his injury status.

Napier spoke out about Lagway and offered a very optimistic update on the Florida quarterback.

“He took team reps today, which is good,” Napier said on Monday. “And obviously, he’s hitting — he had a great, full stack of throws last week, four days in a row. Didn’t scrimmage but did quite a bit of work that day. So yeah, he’s feeling much better and he’s moving around well.”

While that is a great update, the season is right around the corner. Lagway still needs to get on the field and back as close to 100 percent as possible.

To start off the season, the Gators will face off against the Long Island University Sharks on August 30 at 7:00 p.m. ET. Hopefully, Lagway will be on the field and will be able to help lead Florida to a strong start.

RotoWire has released their projections for Lagway during the 2025 season. They believe he will throw for 2,959 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, while recording 212 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
