Former Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie was in demand this past week.
It was revealed that multiple teams had interest in trading for the former second-round selection. However, the Philadelphia Eagles won the deal. Suddenly, there’s a new wideout in the City of Brotherly Love.
Who Was the Other Team?
According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Eagles’ conference rival, the San Francisco 49ers, had a deal on the table for Metchie. The Texans reportedly took the more favorable of the two.

Coming out of college, Metchie carried three years of experience under his belt. He played in 30 games. During that stretch, Metchie caught 155 passes for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns.
When Metchie entered the NFL in 2022, the Houston Texans called on him with the 44th overall pick in the second round. Unfortunately, Metchie was sidelined for his entire rookie season. Two summers ago, he participated in his first training camp and debuted with a 16-game showing.

In his first season playing, Metchie caught 16 passes for 158 yards. In the following season, Metchie appeared in 13 games. The young veteran caught 24 passes for 257 yards and one touchdown. It was the first of his career.
Metchie didn’t carve out a key role in Houston. He might struggle to breakout with one in Philadelphia, too, but the Eagles have certainly got stronger in the depth department with the young veteran out of Alabama.
The Eagles have one of the strongest wide receiver duos in the game with AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith. In just 13 games last year, Brown accounted for 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns. As for Smith, he produced 833 yards, along with eight touchdowns in 13 games.

Metchie will battle with Jahan Dotson for that third spot. Last year, Dotson was in a similar position to Dotson. Late in the summer, the Eagles acquired Dotson from the Washington Commanders. In 17 games, Dotson caught 19 passes for 216 yards. He didn’t produce a ton, but came up with some big plays in the playoffs.
The Eagles will attempt to get the former Texan as comfortable as possible in their system, as they prepare for the third and final preseason outing, which takes place against the New York Jets on Friday, August 22.
