Mark Rober, the former NASA engineer turned YouTube creator, is heading to Netflix.
Rober, who has over 68M subscribers, is working on a new competition series for the streamer and will also bring some of his existing content, which currently lives on YouTube, to the service. The move has been in the works a while.
It marks the latest creator who made their name on the free streaming site to partner with Netflix after the likes of Ms. Rachel, prank collective The Sidemen and the creators of viral dating show Pop The Balloon.
In March, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said YouTube was useful for creators to “cut their teeth on” and called the Google-owned platform a “little bit of a farm league”. Jeff Gaspin, who runs unscripted, followed this up last month by telling Deadline, “These content creators are even more prolific and more pronounced today than they even were a year ago. The creativity is off the charts.”
Rober’s untitled show, which will launch in 2026, is targeted towards kids and family.
It will be produced by his company CrunchLabs, which recently hired former Lionsgate exec Scott Lewers as Chief Content Officer, and Jimmy Kimmel’s competition. The late-night host has previously worked with Rober, a frequent guest on his ABC show, on Discovery’s Revengineers.
Rober, Lewers, Kimmel and Kimmelot President Scott Lonker will exec produce.
The streamer said that in addition to the show, Rober will “bring some of his most beloved, ambitious, and informative experiments to Netflix later this year”.
“I love turning learning into a game, basically hiding the vegetables in the dessert, and now it’s a full-on competition game show!” said Rober. “When you’re having fun, you’re learning without even realizing it. And teaming up with Netflix and Jimmy Kimmel to make this happen? This is gonna be epic.”
Kimmel added, “My kids love Mark Rober, and so do their parents. Mark’s videos are so clever and inventive, it’s easy to forget that they’re educational, too. We can’t wait to introduce one of the best and brightest creators to Netflix.”
