Summary

  • James Gunn confirmed he is already scheduling the sequel to Superman
  • The fast turnaround signals confidence in the new DC Universe
  • Gunn has a 60-page treatment complete and is now writing the script

DC Studios co-CEO and writer-director James Gunn has confirmed he is already fast-tracking the sequel to his latest film, Superman. In a recent interview, Gunn revealed that he has completed a 60-page treatment for the film and that production is already being scheduled.

The news comes after the new Superman movie, starring David Corenswet, received positive reviews and performed well at the box office. The quick turnaround signals that Warner Bros. and DC Studios are confident in the new direction of the franchise and want to keep the momentum going.

While Gunn has been vague about whether the film is a direct sequel or a team-up, he has confirmed to Collider that it is the “next chapter” in a larger “Superman Saga.” He stated, “We’re scheduling it now. I’m totally done with the treatment. My treatments are incredibly intense — 60 pages with dialogue and everything. Now I’m just turning that into a script, and we’re planning when to shoot. It’s going to be much sooner rather than later.” The DC slate sees the release of Peacemaker Season 2, Supergirl, the Lanterns TV show, Wonder Woman and Clayface. Gunn also gave more information regarding the other projects, revealing, “Clayface is a totally different thing. Although it’s in the same universe, it’s a complete horror film, and that’s one of the things we want to do. There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is gonna be like Superman. The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it…We don’t want people being bored.”

This fast-tracked production is a significant sign of the new DC Universe’s confidence, with a long-term plan already in place to create a cohesive and interconnected slate of films.
