At least one person, believed to be a teenager, was taken to a hospital in critical condition after an alleged house party shooting in West Covina on Saturday night, witnesses say.
Footage obtained by KTLA on Sunday shows a heavy police response at a home on Peachtree Lane and East Camellia Drive, with multiple people detained as partygoers left around 10 p.m.
In the video, a police helicopter circles overhead while K-9 units search nearby yards. Officers detain several people as groups of young partygoers leave the area; those detained appear to be in their teens.
A handgun and a single shoe are visible in the roadway next to evidence markers, and a parked car appears to have a shattered window. In one clip, a handcuffed individual spits toward the camera, and another yells profanities at onlookers.
Unconfirmed reports by the stringer service RMG state the event was a “back-to-school” house and pool party that drew more than 100 attendees, many between 16 and 18 years old, and that at least three people were taken into custody for reasons not immediately clear.
RMG further reported that one person was taken to a hospital by a private party and died shortly after arrival. KTLA has not independently verified these details with Covina police, including the number of people detained, the size of the crowd, or any injury or fatality information.
Two girls who arrived after the gunfire told the news stringer service videographer they encountered a large police presence and K-9s already deployed. They did not witness the shooting, but said police confirmed that a shooting took place.
“I’ve never heard of an incident like this in West Covina, so I didn’t believe it until the cop actually told me,” said a 17-year-old girl. “I’ve been living around here my whole life, so I’m kinda sad.”
The 16-year-old friend being interviewed alongside the 17-year-old added that two boys who were detained appeared to be young.
“I didn’t expect them to do all that, I don’t know where he got that gun,” she said.
The exact circumstances surrounding the gunfire remain unclear, and it was not immediately known whether additional people were injured.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Covina Police Department.
