Ruben Amorim faces an early test of wills to prove he has turned a corner as Manchester United manager as the Red Devils host Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. The showdown at the Theater of Dreams is easily the prized gem on this opening Premier League weekend, pitting two bitter rivals against one another from the off.
United endured the worst finish of its Premier League history last season, settling for a 15th-place finish, 13 positions and 32 points lower than the Gunners. That marked the third consecutive campaign in which Arsenal have finished as runner-up, hoping to finally end its 22-year wait for a league title this term.
And Amorim will find at least one familiar face in the opposition line-up as Viktor Gyokeres, his former frontman at Sporting CP, comes to Old Trafford. Not as the Portuguese tactician will have hoped, however, after United were also linked with the Swede, who scored a remarkable 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting.
United fans landed their striker target in Benjamin Sesko, who could line up in a new-look front three alongside Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha this weekend. Things can’t get a lot worse for the Red Devils compared to the hell that was last season, with the club hoping to start afresh after a promising pre-season.
