The Arizona Diamondbacks are turning heads around Major League Baseball.
Months after signing second baseman Ketel Marte to a multi-year extension, the Diamondbacks are reportedly looking to trade him in the offseason, according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale.
“The worst-kept secret in the Arizona Diamondbacks organizationis out: They will listen to offers on All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte this winter, knowing that while Marte is extremely talented, he can be a diva in the clubhouse, agitating his teammates and coaching staff. His detractors are still angry that he took a day off the final week of last season when they were fighting for their playoff lives.
“Though Marte’s house in Arizona was robbed the night of the All-Star Game, he took a vacation after the break, leaving the D-backs seething. …. The D-backs won’t trade their three-time All-Star and NLCS MVP who has $92.5 million left on his contract after this season without getting fair value in return, but they’re also aware that he’ll become a 10-and-5 player early next season that gives him full no-trade rights. Certainly, the phone lines will be open.”
Aside from the fact that Marte’s behavior is new within the last few months, it appears Arizona wants to start over. Enter the Atlanta Braves as a possible landing spot for Marte.
The Braves will likely be shopping Ozzie Albies in the offseason, which will create an opening at second base. While Marte’s contract would increase payroll and he is older than Albies, adding the 31-year-old infielder would help the Braves turn things around after a disappointing season.
Entering Sunday, Marte was slashing .298/.399/.558 for the Diamondbacks with 23 home runs and 56 RBI. His bat would provide a major upgrade for a Braves lineup that is searching for offensive help.
Atlanta would need to play its cards right when discussing deals to acquire Marte and shop Albies as it needs to hold onto the power in the negotiations. General manager Alex Anthopoulos will have his hands full in that regard.
However, if the Braves have a chance to acquire Marte, they should absolutely push to get the deal done.
