The Premier League is back with a bang for both Aston Villa and Newcastle United as two teams who finished last season level on points collide in Saturday’s early kick-off. The Magpies clinched a place in this term’s Champions League by goal difference just a few months ago and will look to put a summer to forget firmly behind them heading to Birmingham.
Alexander Isak’s involvement at Villa Park remains a mystery following weeks of discontent in England’s northeast. The Swede is still being linked with a $200 million move to Liverpool after refusing to join Newcastle on its pre-season tour of Asia, having also been frozen out by manager Eddie Howe as punishment for his deeds.
And Saturday’s guests could do with his input after Isak scored three goals in his last three encounters with Villa, each of which has gone in Newcastle’s favor. However, Unai Emery’s men will hope to turn the dial and establish some early dominance in the hunt for Champions League qualification with some Week 1 revenge.
While Isak’s place is in doubt, new arrival Anthony Elanga should make a Premier League debut for Newcastle following his $75 million switch from Nottingham Forest. Striker Evann Guessand may make his bow for Villa, meanwhile, after joining from Nice as the club’s biggest signing of the summer to date.
