An elderly woman is dead and another person was injured after an impaired driver careened into a house in Downey overnight, police say.
The Downey Police Department put out a press release just before 7 a.m. Saturday stating that officers were called to the 9500 block of Gallatin Road around 2:20 a.m. after a traffic collision was reported.
First responders rushed to the area to find the vehicle involved almost completely inside the home. One person who was inside, a 73-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another person inside the home, a 24-year-old woman, was hospitalized. Her condition was not disclosed by authorities.
Neighbors told KTLA 5’s Jennifer McGraw on Saturday morning that the car ended up in two separate rooms after the crash.
Officers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 24-year-old man from Maywood was driving eastbound on Gallatin when he collided with the residence. He was uninjured.
It was later found the man – whose name has not been released – was under the influence when the crash happened.
He was taken into custody for DUI, Downey police said.
No further details were immediately disclosed. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the Downey Police Department: 562-904-2308.
