The Chicago Cubs are one of the best teams in baseball this season, but when the offseason hits, they’re going to have their work cut out for them to continue their dominance in 2026.
Going into the offseason, re-signing slugging outfielder Kyle Tucker will likely be the Cubs’ top priority, but it’s far from a guarantee.
Rich Eberwein of Cubbies Crib recently suggested the Cubs should pursue a reunion with slugger Kyle Schwarber in free agency this offseason, especially if they miss out on re-signing Tucker.
“The Cubs have a chance to rectify that mistake with Schwarber hitting free agency this winter. The former first-round pick will be 33 next March, but he has shown no signs of slowing down,” Eberwein wrote. “The lefty slugger is enjoying an MVP-caliber campaign in 2025, with 42 home runs, 97 RBI, and 78 walks through his first 118 games. Schwarber is on pace to set career-highs in the home run and RBI categories and give Ohtani a run for his money in the NL MVP race.
“Even if Schwarber wins the MVP, he will likely be significantly cheaper than Tucker this offseason. Not that it should matter because a big-market team like the Cubs should pay for the high-end talent anyway, but that’s another matter.”
Schwarber would be a perfect fit as the Cubs’ everyday designated hitter, and it would provide the Chicago faithful with a fan favorite who should have never left the Windy City.
Adding a slugger like the Phillies’ superstar back to the Cubs’ lineup would be huge, especially if they lose Tucker. It would be nearly impossible to replicate a player like Tucker for the next seven, eight or even 10 years, but having Schwarber would certainly lessen the loss.
