Woman’s Choice of Meal During Flight Leaves Internet Outraged—’Arrestable’

It is good to have a range of snack options during a flight, especially on the longer journeys. But one woman has been slammed online for her choice of in-flight meal, which TikTok users have dubbed unacceptable and even “selfish.”

Laura Vercaemst, 30, was on a three-hour flight in June when she got hungry and decided to look at what food was available on the menu. However, she only wanted something gut-friendly, leaving her with very few options.

As it turned out, Vercaemst, from Belgium, was left with just one choice, telling Newsweek that “sardines were the only thing” on the menu that were gut-health approved. She shared a video on TikTok (@havegutshealth) of the moment she opened the tin of sardines on the flight, joking that she was just trying to be healthy but her “neighbors hate [her] for it.”

The video went viral with over 238,100 views and more than 2,500 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. Internet users were certainly shocked by her choice of in-flight meal, and they weren’t afraid to express their anger.

Of course, Vercaemst was sure to check in with the passengers nearby to make sure they were fine with her opening the tin before doing so.

“It crossed my mind what other people would think, hence why I asked my surroundings first,” she said. “I also doubted whether to actually buy them at first. But I checked with them if it was OK for me to open them, and they were perfectly fine with it.”

Since sharing the video on TikTok, Vercaemst has been amazed by the level of outrage and frustration that it has created on social media. She said that her intention was “to make people laugh” with a playful clip; it certainly wasn’t to generate so much rage online.

Ultimately, Vercaemst was hungry on a flight, she wanted something gut-friendly, and the people near her were fine with it. For her, the outrage seems completely unnecessary.

“The online reactions are intense; people telling me they wish my plane crashes next time, or telling me that I’m narcissistic,” Vercaemst continued.

“I find it interesting that people felt as offended as they did. I think it shows that I’m mirroring something inside of themselves. So, maybe the video could create more consciousness if people are ready to discover why it triggers them so much,” she said.

Hundreds of internet users have shared their horror and dismay at her meal choice, leading to more than 670 comments on the TikTok video so far.

One comment reads: “Can we please start to think about other people too and just stop being so damn selfish.”

Another TikTok user wrote: “just because you can doesn’t mean you should, let’s normalize being considerate of others.”

A third person replied: “Fish on a place should be arrestable.”

But not everyone was against her decision, as one commenter added: “Is smelling food that bad? Like once they have eaten, the smell will be gone. People are so dramatic these days.”
