Halle Berry turned 59 on Thursday and seemingly celebrated by throwing some subtle shade at her first husband, David Justice, in a birthday post.
“Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering,” she captioned a series of photos on what looked like a tropical vacation with current partner, Van Hunt.
In one photo, she was lounging with a glass of red wine in between her toes.
Other pics showed her and Hunt in bed with a plate of chips, an envelope addressed to “mom” (presumably a birthday card from her children), bikini shots and a chocolate birthday cake.
Berry’s carefree clap back comes on the heels of internet trolls slamming Justice for describing her as allegedly not possessing “motherly” traits when they were married in the ’90s.
In a recent interview with former NBA star Matt Barnes on his “All the Smoke” podcast, former MLB player Justice said he “decided to leave” Berry in 1996, after three years of marriage, because he couldn’t see her being the mother of his children.
Justice opened up about their relationship after Barnes asked about having his personal life under scrutiny back in the day. “I didn’t really have, any real personal stuff, until Halle and I got together,” he explained. “And, of course, that was a lot of focus, because back in them times, I can’t think — other than Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe — I can’t think of anybody that was us,” he added.
Justice said he didn’t experience “a lot of negative attention, until I decided to leave her in 1996.” He further claimed that Berry asked him to marry her, five months after they started dating, and, “I couldn’t say no. I said, ‘OK,’ but I don’t know if my heart was really into it,” he said.
As for his decision to end the marriage? “I was young, and had only been in one real relationship before her,” he explained.
“My knowledge, and my understanding… my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast. So, I’m looking at my mom, and I’m a Midwest guy, so, in my mind, I’m thinking, a wife, at that time, should cook, clean, and, so, I’m thinking, ‘OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build up a family with?’ And, at that time, as a young guy, she don’t cook, don’t clean, and don’t really seem like motherly,” he said.
Berry reportedly sought a temporary restraining order against Justice that same year, citing fear for “personal safety and well-being.” He responded by stating that he posed “no threat to Halle.”
In his interview with Barnes, Justice reportedly also accused Berry of using the Hollywood “machine” to help ruin his reputation.
“The one thing that probably hurt the most is: Halle had a relationship with a gentleman, who hit her on the side of the head, so she lost some hearing, but she never made him public,” he said.
Justice said people still believe it was him, “from 1996 until even today,” he said.
“That’s just a quick Google search… That girl ain’t never said l hit her in the head, but one thing I didn’t like is… she let the world think it. She didn’t come out and say, ‘No, it’s not David’… she let the world think it was me, and that I never appreciated with her. I thought she was dead wrong for that,” he said.
Berry went on to marry singer Eric Benet from 2001 to 2005, and Olivier Martinez from 2013 to 2016.
She and Hunt have been in a relationship since 2020.
Berry has not addressed Justice’s viral interview, aside from the suggestive birthday post.
