Taylor Swift knew so little about football when she began dating Travis Kelce, she once asked the offensive player what it was like to face off against his brother, also an offensive player, on the field.
The “Cruel Summer” singer admitted that on the couple’s first date she asked when the Kansas City Chiefs play the Eagles — Jason Kelce’s former team — what it was like to look across the line of scrimmage and see his brother standing five feet away.
“He didn’t even look at me,” Swift said during Travis and Jason’s “New Heights” podcast on Wednesday, adding, “I now know what an insane question that was.”
Swift recalled Travis replying, “Actually, I’m on the offense and my brother’s on the offense, and I’m only on the field at the same time as the defense.”
Swift admitted, “I thought everyone was on the field at the same time.”
She shared that she’s now up to speed and “obsessed” with the sport, to which Travis said, “I am forever thankful for you diving into the football world wholeheartedly.”
The brothers memorably faced off in the Super Bowl in 2023, with the since-retired Jason, 37, playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and Travis, 35, playing for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs narrowly emerged victorious against the Eagles with a final score of 38-35.
Swift and Travis subsequently began dating months later, in the summer of 2023, after the latter attended her Eras Tour show in Missouri. But at the time, he was unable to get the pop star’s attention.
The NFL star took to “New Heights” in July 2023 to admit that he was “butthurt” that Swift failed to entertain him backstage, where he had plans to present her with a friendship bracelet inscribed with his phone number.
“I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings,” he confessed to Jason at the time.
“So, I was a little butthurt that I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her.”
Travis added, “she doesn’t meet anybody — or at least she didn’t want to meet me. So I took it personal.”
On Wednesday’s podcast, Swift joked of Travis, “He threw a tantrum. He threw a man-tantrum. It was such a wild romantic gesture to be like, ‘I wanna date you!’ This dude didn’t get a meet-and-greet and he’s making it everyone’s problem. That’s what I thought at first.”
The missed opportunity didn’t seem to stand in the way of an epic romance, which developed in the ensuing months — with Swift supporting her man at Chiefs games and Travis jetting out for Eras Tour performances.
During the podcast Swift compared his determination to meet her to an ’80s John Hughes movie, telling listeners it was like having someone “standing outside my window with a boombox like, ‘I want to date you! Do you want to go on a date with me? I made you a friendship bracelet! Do you want to date me?’”
However, there still remain some questions as to exactly how — and under what circumstances — the pair finally connected.
When Jason asked Swift “how true” it is that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid set the couple up, she quipped, “Whatever Andy Reid says, we’re gonna stand by. He says it, that’s what happened.”
“Cupid. Big Red,” Travis added.
