Josh Allen Ranked Behind Joe Burrow, Named ‘Hardest to Defend’

There are three things that are important to the people in Buffalo: family, chicken wings and Josh Allen leading the Buffalo Bills to success.

Allen’s tenure in the NFL is synonymous with comparisons to Joe Burrow and debates of which quarterback is better. Mike Sando of The Athletic has Burrow ahead of Allen but lists him as the hardest quarterback to defend.

“Josh Allen is the toughest quarterback to defend,” a defensive coordinator told Sando. “He is a combination of Lamar and Burrow. Lamar is the better runner. Burrow is the better pure passer. Josh is right in the middle. He can sling the ball around for 400 yards. If you have that covered, he can run for 100 yards, too.”

Sando was quick to explain why he ranked Burrow ahead of Allen.

“Allen ranks a tick below Mahomes and Burrow even though some consider him the most challenging to defend,” wrote Sando. “That’s because a few voters valued pure passing over running strongly enough to place a line after Mahomes and Burrow.”

“Josh Allen presents some issues that Mahomes doesn’t present, just how strong he is and how good of a runner he is,” one voter told Sando. “I watched him single-handedly beat us. It’s just, God, you can’t tackle him. And he’s got a cannon.”

Allen has continued to improve every season he has been in the league. Turnovers were his biggest criticism going into last year, and he took steps forward in that aspect.

Those who voted may value a pure passer over someone who can run, but the ever-changing dynamic of the league may dictate otherwise sooner rather than later.
