The New York Jets will have some tough decisions to make in the coming weeks to trim their roster.

One position that has a lot of depth is the running back position. Jets writer Zack Rosenblatt from The Athletic believes the team will cut Donovan Edwards but admits he does have an outside chance to make the team.

“Out: Donovan Edwards, Lawrance Toafili, Andrew Beck (fullback),” wrote Rosenblatt. “Edwards hasn’t flashed much during training camp but had a nice 73-yard touchdown run on Saturday (albeit wiped out by a holding penalty) and Glenn raved about him after the game. If he keeps this level of play up, it’ll be harder to keep him off the roster.”

Aside from his touchdown run that was wiped out, Edwards finished the game with nine carries for 43 yards. His yards per carry number should help score some brownie points with the Jets coaching staff along with the touchdown run that was called back.

The fourth and final running back spot will be decided between Edward and Kene Nwangwu. New York will have a touch decision to make as Nwangwu has a major role on special teams.

“And while Nwangwu has gotten reps with the backups his role is primarily on special teams and as the team’s primary kick returner,” wrote Rosenblatt.

If Edwards want to boost his odds of making the team, he could get some work in practice on special teams with returning kicks and punts. Otherwise, he would have to prove to the Jets he’s worth a spot and have the team switch gears with its return units.
