A 37-year-old technical engineer at a popular local AM radio station is lucky to be alive after Good Samaritans pulled him a fiery freeway crash in South Los Angeles last week.
It’s unclear what exactly caused the Aug. 7 crash on the 105 Freeway at the 110 interchange, but footage posted to social shows Stefan Cabezas’ vehicle behind a guardrail fully engulfed in flames as thick plumes of black smoke poured out of the vehicle.
Kenyati Hubbard, who was first on the scene, told KTLA that the 37-year-old would have burned to death because he was trapped and there was no way out.
“I told my wife, ‘Stop the car now, stop the car now!” he explained. “I jumped over the guardrail, and I ran for the car and I’m trying to grab onto the passenger door up high, but it’s locked.”
With the help of three other Good Samaritans, Hubbard was able to pull the 37-year-old out of the vehicle, likely saving his life.
The KFI AM 640 technical engineer, affectionately known to fans of “The Conway Show” and “Later with Mo’Kelly” as “The Foosh,” suffered serious injuries, especially to his left arm, which was pinned beneath car.
“If it weren’t for the help of Good Samaritans who pulled him from his burning car on the 105 Freeway, tied a tourniquet around his injured arm and kept him calm until help arrived, we would be telling a very different story today,” Tim Conway Jr. wrote in a GoFundMe campaign organized to help Cabezas while he’s recovering from the devastating accident.
The 37-year-old has since undergone three surgeries at UCLA Harbor Medical Center and is expected to survive.
Conway Jr., the son of the legendary comedian Tim Conway and host of his popular, long running KFI talk radio show, took to the airwaves Monday to thank Hubbard and the other three men who pulled Cabezas out of the fiery wreckage.
“I thought he was a goner,” he told KTLA. “It was the worst feeling in the world.”
Later this week, The Foosh’s KFI coworkers plan to meet with the four men who helped save their colleague and friend’s life at the radio station for a “Hero Hot Dog Day” and to talk with Conway during his show.
