When it comes to rookie quarterbacks, New York Giants first-rounder Jaxson Dart was a clear standout throughout the first week of the NFL Preseason.

Not only did Dart excite the Giants’ fan base, while earning props from his coaches, but the young quarterback earned some positive analysis from analysts as well. Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky was a believer in Dart before last Saturday’s action. He remains optimistic after seeing nearly 20 passes out of the young QB.

“I thought Dart looked really good,” Orlovsky said on the ‘Pat McAfee Show.’

“I think the things that you liked were he made some different kind of throws that weren’t demanded of him. Some timing routes to the outside of the perimeter. Balls across the middle that weren’t necessarily crossers. I thought he was really strong in the pocket; that’s one of his calling cards. Out of all of the kids in the class this year, I thought he was the best in the pocket.”

Dart entered the matchup against the Buffalo Bills as the second quarterback to take the field after Russell Wilson. He threw 19 passes, completing 12 of his attempts for 154 yards and one touchdown.

While some believe that Dart could soon challenge Wilson for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart, Orlovsky believes it would be an ideal scenario to keep Dart on the side as long as the Giants are doing just fine.

“I wouldn’t rush Jaxson Dart on the field,” said Orlovsky.

“I think Russell Wilson is the starter and, hopefully, has some success. I think the best. I think the best thing for the team and for Jaxson Dart is that Brian Daboll is his coach for the foreseeable future, and that happens if they are capable of winning and being competitive this year.”

As impressive as Dart was on Saturday, Orlovsky still had his critiques. Pointing out two specific factors, the former quarterback noted that Dart was playing too fast. He then pointed out that there was a scenario where Dart should’ve checked the ball down to the running back, and opted for a short run instead.

Outside of that, the ex-NFL passer believes that Dart is on the right track. The Giants will see more out of their first-round pick this weekend, when the Giants and the Jets battle it out.
