Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the New York Giants won’t have Daniel Jones starting under center for the first time since 2020. These days, Russell Wilson will be in that seat, until the organization deems Jaxson Dart ready.
As for Jones, he’s in the AFC, fighting for the top spot on the Indianapolis Colts’ depth chart. Currently, the former Giant is battling with Anthony Richardson.
A recent quarterback rankings list helped Jones’ case to win the Colts’ starting role. The Athletic polled six GMs, six assistant GMs, six former GMs, five other anonymous NFL executives, eight head coaches, and 19 other coaches, totaling 50 voters in a position of power across the league.
The results didn’t turn out great for the Colts as a team, but Jones’ case got a little stronger.
The veteran quarterback ranked No. 30 on the list. As for Richardson, he came in at No. 32, just behind Daniel Jones and the Cleveland Browns quarterback, Joe Flacco.

Richardson’s run with the Colts has not gone as well as the team had hoped so far. In 2023, the Colts took a massive chance on Richardson, who entered the NFL Draft out of Florida. After throwing for 3,105 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions, Richardson was selected fourth overall by the Colts.
He started in just four games during his rookie season. Richardson completed 59 percent of his passes for 577 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. He rushed 25 times for 136 yards and four touchdowns. Richardson had a 2-2 record through his first four games with the Colts as a starter.
Last season, the former fourth pick started in 11 games. During that time, Richardson threw for 1,814 yards, eight touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The Colts achieved a 6-5 record with Richardson under center.
When Indianapolis signed Jones, the front office and coaching staff made it clear that the two quarterbacks would battle it out for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart. In the Colts’ Week 1 game of the preseason, Richardson got the start before leaving early with an injury. Jones was slated to start in Week 2.
So far, it seems that neither player has really separated themselves. From the outside looking in, it seems the former Giant could be on pace to start his first game in September since leaving the Giants last year. The Colts still have a little under a month to decide what their ultimate plan will be.
