Warning: spoilers for Netflix’s Wednesday season 2 (and season 1) ahead!
Netflix knows they have a hit on their hands with Wednesday, Tim Burton’s goth-Hogwarts take on the Addams Family starring Jenna Ortega, and they’re wringing every last drop of our attention out of us while they can. Hey, fair enough. Instead of dropping every episode of season 2 at once as the streamer usually—but not always—does, they posted the first four episodes, and are now making fans wait a full month before releasing the second half of the season. Which means there are some major cliff-hangers to obsess over for the next few weeks.
Need a quick primer? Look no further. Here’s what we learned—and what we’re still trying to figure out—from the shocking mid-season finale.
Who was the mysterious Avian?
One mystery that did get wrapped up over the course of the first four episodes was the identity of the Avian, the mysterious hooded figure controlling the town’s crows, and making them commit murder (insert “murder of crows” joke here). It’s Judi (Heather Mattarazzo), the seemingly ditzy assistant at the Willow Hill Psychiatric Facility. Her father’s experiments gave her the ability to control the birds for her own nefarious and vengeful reasons.
Who was Lois?
Not a who but a what! Twist! The much-discussed “Lois” at Willow Hill was neither doctor nor patient but a program: LOIS, which stands for Longterm Outcast Integration Study. As part of the program, the Willow Hill administrators faked the deaths of outcast patients and subjected them to secret tests in the basement of the facility.
What’s going on with Tyler?
As revealed at the end of season 1, Wednesday’s classmate Tyler (Hunter Doohan) was the mysterious “Hyde” attacking innocents around town at the behest of his master, Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci). It’s not entirely clear how much control the nice-enough Tyler has when he’s in his Hyde form, or how much responsibility he bears for what he does; Wednesday was maybe going to look into this mystery… but then Tyler’s dad, the town sheriff, was murdered by one of the Avian’s crows, and Tyler’s mental state got even worse while locked up in Willow Hill.
Oh, and then he turned back into his Hyde form and killed Marilyn, which he thinks will free him but will actually lead to him going insane. Yikes. At the end of the fourth episode, he’s on the loose and threw Wednesday out a window.
What happened to Enid?
Early on in season 2, Wednesday has a vision where she sees Enid’s headstone. Enid herself then appears, shaking Wednesday and blaming her for her death. So far, Enid is still alive and kicking (and getting cozy with a boy named Bruno). Will Enid be killed in part 2? Or, as Morticia warns Wednesday, was her vision lacking important context?
What will the rest of season 2 be about?
Well, Wednesday’s in a coma and all of the Willow Hill outcasts are running amok thanks to Uncle Fester’s power surge breaking the security system. And we’re gonna figure out where Lady Gaga fits into all of this! Should be a dreadful time when Wednesday season 2 returns on September 2.
