Rockstar Games‘ Red Dead Redemption 2 is officially the sixth best-selling video game of all time, selling 77 million copies.
Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive confirmed the news in their recent earnings, adding that the sequel sold four million units the past quarter. RDR 2 was also named as the best-selling title of the past seven years in the United States based on dollar sales, with the franchise selling more than 104 million units worldwide.
Dexerto notes that RDR 2 overtakes Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow to take the No. 6 spot. The game is behind Mario Kart 8/Deluxe, Ark: Survival Evolved, Wii Sports, Grand Theft Auto V and Minecraft.
RDR 2 released in October 2018 — eight years after its successor. It served as a prequel to the first game, following the story of outlaw and Van der Linde gang member Arthur Morgan as the US slowly begins to leave the Wild West lifestyle behind. The game held the record for the second-biggest launch in entertainment, earning $725 million USD in sales during its opening weekend. It surpassed the lifetime sales of Red Dead Redemption in just two weeks, was critically and commercially acclaimed and went on to take homeover 175 Game of the Year awards.
