Jordan Spieth was on the verge of returning to the top 50 of the FedEx Cup rankings, a position he has been missing since 2023. The three-time major winner entered the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first event of the PGA Tour playoffs, ranked 48th, so he needed a solid result to maintain his status.
The event’s outcome showed that Spieth would have needed to finish in the top 25 to achieve his goal. Unfortunately for him, his performance fell far short of that level, and he bowed out of the current regular season early.
Spieth never found his best golf during the first three rounds of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, in which he carded 69, 70, and 70. Sunday was slightly better, although in practice it was more of the same. He carded a final-round 68 to take his 72-hole score to 3-under and finish tied for 38th.
Spieth finished the regular season ranked 54th in the FedEx Cup standings after this result. If he maintains that position, he will secure his PGA Tour card for next season. However, he can’t let his guard down and is likely to play in some events during the so-called Fall FedEx Cup.
For example, a year ago, Spieth also finished outside the top 50 (67th), didn’t play in the Fall FedEx Cup, and fell to 80th in the rankings. It was enough to keep his card, which was reserved for all members of the top 125.

But this season, only the top 100 will earn full membership for next year. Despite being 46 spots above the cutoff, Spieth certainly won’t take too many risks and will try to maintain his status by playing in the fall.
Two weeks ago, ahead of playing at the Wyndham Championship, Spieth said that breaking into the top 50 would be a great result, but that he expects his definitive leap forward for next season.
“Next year’s going to be a really good year for me, I can feel it,” Spieth told reporters at Sedgefield Country Club. “It’s all coming along. I’ll be healthy, and just structurally putting, the mechanics are all getting really, really close. One good offseason should get me nailed down to where I could be as good as I’ve been. That’s my goal.”
Spieth, a 13-time PGA Tour winner, including three major championships, has been out of the winner’s circle since 2022. He underwent surgery a year ago to resolve a wrist injury that has significantly affected his game in recent seasons.
