After almost three weeks without a Major League Soccer fixture, the LA Galaxy is in for a tough return to domestic matters as it hosts a high-flying Seattle Sounders side on Sunday. Both teams have been preoccupied with their commitments in the Leagues Cup and will return to MLS matters, facing very different prospects for the upcoming season. Greg Vanney’s men are a month removed from their most recent league win and sit dead last in the MLS standings, while the Sounders are up to fourth after going more than two months without a loss.
Brian Schmetzer’s side have won three and drawn three of their last six MLS fixtures, striking a rich vein of form since their unceremonious exit from the FIFA Club World Cup. Seattle failed to win any of its three games in the competition but has since embarked upon a relentless run of results.
Just eight points separate the Sounders from top spot in the Western, while the Galaxy are close to being ruled out of a play-off place in record time. Vanney’s side holds the MLS Cup at present and beat Seattle in their last encounter back in December, but the odds are stacked against the Galaxy heading into Sunday’s showdown.
