Entering this race, Alex Palou sits first in the point standings with 590 points, giving him a 121-point lead over second-place Pato O’Ward. Palau has eight wins in the first 14 races of the season, as well as 12 top 10s. It’s been a dominant season for the three-time IndyCar champion. A title this year would make him the first driver to win three in a row since Dario Franchitti from 2009 to 2011. Scott Dixon, Palou’s Chip Ganassi Racing teammate, is third in points.
Palou has a pair of Portland victories, winning in 2021 and 2023. Other drivers racing this year with past wins here are Will Power and Scott McLaughlin, who both are struggling a bit in the overall standings.
