Yankees Devin Williams Finally Breaks Silence On Brutal Struggles

The New York Yankees are going through some unprecedented struggles right now, and the spotlight is firmly on the duo of manager Aaron Boone and closer Devin Williams.

The spotlight (and blame) is on Williams because he’s blown three consecutive appearances for the Yankees, running his total to four blown saves and four losses on the season, to go alongside his 5.73 ERA. The spotlight is on Boone for continuing to trust Williams with the game on the line.

Williams has surrendered five earned runs, two home runs, and five hits over his 2 2/3 innings this month. On Friday, he was handed the loss after surrendering three runs in extra innings against the Houston Astros.

“Not making pitches. It’s pretty simple. I stink right now,” Williams said in a video posted to X by SNY following Saturday’s loss to the Astros.

Friday’s loss marks the fifth straight appearance in which Williams has surrendered at least one run. He’s allowed at least one run in seven out of his last nine appearances, though the Yankees have won six of those games.

At this point, it’s likely starting to impact his confidence.

“I’m not going to say it’s (Williams’ confidence) as high as it’s ever been, obviously not the way that things have been going. I just need to put some good ones together, get the ball rolling in the right direction,” Williams said in a subsequent video.

It’s past time for Boone to move on from Williams in the closer role. The team has Luke Weaver, David Bednar, and Camilo Doval, who could be placed in the higher leverage spots rather than Williams.

It seems like this situation is getting worse with each outing.
