A police officer killed after a man opened fire outside the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta on Friday, has been hailed as someone who served with “courage, integrity, and unwavering dedication.”

Officer David Rose, 33, was shot while responding to the gunfire, the DeKalb County Police Department said in a news release. He was transported to nearby Emory University Hospital where he died of his injuries.

Newsweek has contacted the police department for further comment via email.

The Context

The attack, which occurred near neighboring Emory University, prompted a massive law enforcement response. No one else was reported to be injured.

The gunman was found on the second floor of the CVS on the Emory University campus across the street from the CDC campus and died at the scene, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said on Friday night. He said “we do not know at this time whether that was from officers or if it was self-inflicted.” Officials said the gunman’s motive remains unknown at this time.

What To Know

Rose had been with the police department since September 2024 and graduated from the police academy in March, the police department said in a news release.

He leaves behind a wife and two children, with a third on the way.

Interim Police Chief Greg Patrick said Rose “was committed to serving the community.”

Patrick added: “At this time we’re asking for the community’s prayers for his family, his friends, his loved ones and the entire DeKalb County Police Department family.”

Rose previously served in the Marine Corps, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

What People Are Saying

The DeKalb County Police Department said on Facebook: “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Officer David Rose who was tragically killed in the line of duty. Officer Rose served DeKalb County with courage, integrity, and unwavering dedication. Even in the face of danger was he diligent in his duty to protect our community. We extend our deepest condolences to Officer Rose’s family, friends, fellow DeKalb County officers, and law enforcement community during this most difficult time.”

DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson said during a news conference: “This evening there is a wife without a husband. There are three children, one unborn, without a father. There is a mother and a father, as well as siblings, who also share in this traumatic loss.”

CDC Director Susan Monarez wrote on X: “We at @CDCgov are heartbroken by today’s attack on our Roybal Campus, which remains on lockdown as authorities investigate the shooting. A courageous local law enforcement officer gave his life, and another was injured, after a gunman opened fire on at least four CDC buildings.

“DeKalb County police, CDC security, and Emory University responded immediately and decisively, helping to prevent further harm to our staff and community. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of everyone at CDC. We are actively coordinating with federal, state, and local partners to fully investigate the shooter and this tragic crime. We are deeply grateful to Governor Kemp, Georgia residents, and the American people for standing with us during this difficult time.”

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on X: “The entire Kemp family is also mourning today’s tragic loss of Officer David Rose. His service and memory will not be forgotten by a grateful state, and his loved ones and fellow @DeKalbCountyPD officers will remain in our hearts and prayers as they grieve his passing and this painful day.”

FBI director Kash Patel wrote on X: “Pray for the family, friends, and colleagues of this hero who acted quickly to defend others and made the ultimate sacrifice. The FBI will offer them our full support.”
