The ‘richest soccer club in the world’ will look to inject some levity into its summer as Newcastle United hosts Atletico Madrid on Saturday in a Sela Cup fixture fans won’t want to miss. The Magpies entered pre-season with such high hopes after finishing fifth in the Premier League to qualify for Europe’s elite competition this term. Still, the reality has been far less hopeful after recently embarking on a winless run of friendlies far and wide.
The most grave news for Eddie Howe’s side has been the development that star striker Alexander Isak wishes to explore his options elsewhere. And the Swede failed to join his teammates on their recent tour of Asia amid talk of a $175 million move to Liverpool, with Newcastle nearing a $100 million move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as his replacement.
It’s been a much more harmonious off-season for Atleti, who have won two and lost two of their pre-season fixtures to date. Los Rojiblancos have also been extremely busy in the transfer market, overhauling their squad as they once again look to break up Barcelona and Real Madrid‘s duopoly in La Liga.
This will be the maiden matchup between these teams as both Newcastle and Atletico look to get their hands on the Sela Cup in England’s northeast. And the host is in particularly dire need of some encouragement before the new campaign gets underway.
