WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The president is pushing to crack down on crime in our nation’s capital starting Friday.
The White House is moving forward with plans to increase federal law enforcement presence in D.C. This comes just days after a former DOGE staffer was assaulted in the city.
Not long after, the president threatened to take federal control of D.C., calling crime “out of control.”
President Trump said on Truth Social that Washington, D.C., will be “a safe place very soon.” He reposted an image of a former DOGE employee who was attacked in D.C.
“You’ll be seeing more soon, I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves,” said White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.
White House officials say the district can expect to see more federal police presence starting Friday.
“The president has been very clear he’s going to take the action necessary to secure the city of Washington,” said Miller.
The administration says it’s part of the president’s goal to make the city safer and aligns with an executive order establishing a task force to reduce crime in the district.
Though D.C. data shows total violent crime down 26% this year compared to last year U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro says it’s still too high.
“We just have too much crime,” said Pirro.
Pirro says the administration and the Metropolitan Police Department are looking to increase law enforcement efforts, especially when it comes to teens.
Over the past two years, D.C. police department data show 56% of carjacking arrests involved those under 18.
“Young people are coddled, and they don’t need to be coddled anymore,” said Pirro.
This increased law enforcement presence is supposed to be a seven-day effort, but could go longer if needed, according to the White House.
