Summary

  • Joy Machine in Chicago will open Speak of the Devil, a duet presentation of artworks by Sydnie and Haylie Jimenez
  • On view from August 9 through September 20, the exhibition brings together over 30 works rooted in the sisters’s shared aesthetic sensibility and practices

Joy Machine is gearing up to present a duo show by Chicago-based artists and twins Haylie and Sydnie  Jimenez, running from August 9 through September 20.

Drawing its title from the tongue-in-cheek saying, Speak of the Devil brings to mind the strange magic of manifestation — say their name, and they will appear. For Haylie and Sydnie, art making summons a similar act of conjuring.

With over 30 primarily ceramic works on view, the show spotlights the sisters’s parallel practices and shared aesthetic, defined by rich narratives, piercing and tattoo-clad bodies and overall punk sensibility.

With figures taking on the likes of their queer, Black and brown friends, neighbors and chosen families, the siblings write: “These groups of people we call family and friends are the best of us and should be recognized as such. We want to fully acknowledge our wonderful communities and depict them as they should be.”
