Instagram unveils new location sharing and reposting features

(NewsNation) — Instagram has introduced three new features, including the ability to share your location, to help users “better connect” with their friends.

The upgrades to the Meta-owned app were introduced on Wednesday. Here is a look at what’s new.

The ability to repost content

Users can now repost public reels and feed posts. According to Instagram, “reposts will be recommended to your friends’ and followers’ feeds” and will appear in a separate tab in the profile section.

In addition, reposts will be credited to the original poster. The app notes that this will allow content creators to reach more people, as their reposted content could be recommended to people who don’t even follow them.

Share your location with Instagram Map

Instagram Map allows users to share their last active location with friends. Similar to other social media apps, the location of users is updated whenever the app is open or when users return to the app if it’s been running in the background.

It is important to note that location sharing is off unless you opt in, and it can be customized. For example, users can choose to share their location with all their friends, close friends, only selected friends or no one at all. It can be turned off at any time.

Parents can enable supervision on the app so that they can control the location sharing on their child’s phones and can be alerted if the location sharing has been turned on.

Friends tab in Reels

According to the app, this tab will allow users to see public content that their friends have interacted with or recommendations from Blends. This feature was rolled out earlier in the year and is now accessible globally.

Instagram notes that it is beginning to roll out controls for this feature, such as the ability of users to hide their own likes and comments on reels, as well as mute activity bubbles from specific people.
