Spotting more scalp in the mirror lately? You’re far from alone—and the best hair-loss shampoos for men may help. “Shampoos for thinning hair are not a solution, but they can assist in creating an optimal environment for the survival of existing hair follicles on the scalp,” says Hardik Doshi, MD, FACS, a double-board-certified lead surgeon. Combined with other hair-growth products like scalp serums and vitamins, the right shampoo (and conditioner for hair loss) can support your scalp health and help improve the overall look and feel of your strands.

In men, the most common cause of thinning is androgenetic alopecia, also known as pattern hair loss or male pattern baldness. This hereditary condition is driven by the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which gradually shrinks hair follicles, shortens growth cycles, and produces finer, weaker strands. Over time, it can lead to visible thinning at the temples and crown. While no shampoo can reverse this process entirely, certain formulas contain ingredients that may preserve your scalp health and add thickness and volume. “These formulas are meant to protect your existing hair and create the best conditions for it to thrive,” says Mandy Buechner, hair-loss practitioner and certified trichologist.

Below, you’ll find the best hair-loss shampoos for men—each selected based on expert recommendations and tested by 12 Glamour contributors.

Key ingredients: Caffeine, biotin, taurine, niacinamide, hydrolyzed vegetal proteins

Color-safe: Yes

Fragrance: Fresh, subtle

  • What we love: Leaves hair feeling fuller and more textured; sulfate-free; safe for daily use
  • Worth noting: Pricier than drugstore picks

Revita’s high-performance shampoo stands out as a well-rounded option for anyone dealing with thinning hair. Developed by dermatologists and backed by clinical research, the formula is packed with proven ingredients—like caffeine and biotin—to stimulate the scalp and support follicle vitality. It also contains hydrolyzed soy and wheat proteins, which help strengthen and repair the hair structure, reduce hair fall, and improve elasticity, says celebrity hair stylist Kat Thompson. Our tester noticed a visible difference in fullness and texture, and the sulfate-free base is gentle enough for daily use and color-treated hair. Pair it with the the Revita conditioner and density serum for a streamlined routine.

Our tester says: “As someone who has been told by trendy salons, ‘You don’t have enough hair to do anything interesting with,’ my usual routine has been to keep my hair and wear a lot of hats,” says Glamour reviewer Walt Gerald, who’s tried other hair-growth products in the past to no success. “The DS Labs shampoo and conditioner combo definitely gave me more hydrated, fuller, thicker hair. I’ve even found myself running my hands through it more—something I never used to do. While I don’t think it’s stimulating regrowth, it’s absolutely maximizing the potential of the hair I do have, which is great.”

Best Thickening: Rogaine Thickening 2-in-1 Shampoo+ Conditioner

CVS

Key ingredients: Rosemary oil, keratin, citric acid

Color-safe: Yes

Fragrance: Minty, herbal

  • What we love: Adds volume and shine; easy-to-use pump; stretches further than other shampoos
  • Worth noting: Doesn’t include minoxidil; may sting if it gets in your eyes

Rogaine is best known for its FDA-approved minoxidil treatments, which stimulate hair growth. While this shampoo-and-conditioner combo doesn’t contain minoxidil and isn’t designed to regrow hair, it’s formulated to complement Rogaine’s topical treatments by boosting volume and gently cleansing the scalp. The pump-top bottle and two-in-one formula are convenient, say our tester, and left his hair looking fuller, shinier, and curlier over time.

What our tester says: “After a couple months of daily use, my hair feels fuller and has a thicker, curlier texture,” says Glamour tester Roberto Caria. “A quarter-size amount is enough to get a good lather, and I use less of it than other shampoos. The scent is very ‘classic male shampoo’—minty, floral, but not overpowering. The only downside is it can sting a little if it gets in your eyes.”

Vegamour

Key ingredients: Karmatin, aloe vera, magnolia bark

Color-safe: Yes

Fragrance: Citrus

  • What we love: Strengthens damaged hair; vegan; visibly reduces shedding
  • Worth noting: Scent is polarizing; higher price point

Designed for anyone dealing with thinning, breakage, or dullness, Vegamour’s GRO Shampoo uses plant-based active ingredients to support healthier-looking hair without sulfates or harsh chemicals. “The formula contains phytoactives like red clover and mung bean, plus a vegan keratin called karmatin that can strengthen damaged, fine hair,” says Kseniya Kobets, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care. According to Rahi Sarbaziha, MD, a double board-certified integrative aesthetics doctor in Beverly Hills, the ingredient works by bonding to the hair shaft to help smooth and fortify strands, and it’s safe for people avoiding minoxidil.

What our tester says: “I’ve been using the Vegamour shampoo and conditioner for about three months now. My hair feels noticeably stronger and fuller—especially my curls,” says Glamour tester Canyon Silliman, who’s dealt with thinning and a dry scalp for years. “If I shower before bed, I wake up with volume for days, and shedding has definitely dropped. The scent’s not my favorite, but I’d still recommend it, especially for men’s hair. My girlfriend has never complimented my hair more.”

Best for Blocking DHT: Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Key ingredients: 1% ketoconazole

Color-safe: Yes

Fragrance: Fresh, medicinal

  • What we love: Contains proven ingredient that fights hair loss; affordable
  • Worth noting: Drying

This affordable, medicated shampoo is the only one in our lineup with ketoconazole, an antifungal ingredient studies show can help block DHT. “Certain shampoos with the antifungal drug ketoconazole may lessen scalp irritation and encourage hair growth,” says Dr. Doshi. This anti-dandruff shampoo contains 1% ketoconazole and is a popular over-the-counter alternative to the 2% strength, which requires a prescription. Our tester says it’s the only product that’s soothed their flaky scalp and left their hair feeling truly clean.

Our tester says: “It lathers really well, smells fresh and medicinal, and leaves my hair feeling truly clean.”

Nutrafol

Key ingredients: Pomegranate enzyme, amino acid, glycerin

Color-safe: Yes

Fragrance: Light, citrus

  • What we love: Two-in-one convenience; helps calm sensitive scalps; doesn’t weigh hair down
  • Worth considering: Doesn’t contain growth actives like minoxidil; pricier than many 2-in-1s

Nutrafol’s two-in-one product is designed to cleanse and condition without weighing hair down—an easy, low-effort option for anyone dealing with thinning, dryness, or scalp sensitivity. The sulfate-free formula helps regulate oil production (something men tend to deal with more than women), while also supporting the scalp microbiome and maintaining a healthy skin barrier. Experts we’ve interviewed in the past consistently recommend Nutrafol’s hair-growth vitamins, and while this duo doesn’t claim to regrow hair, it complements the brand’s internal regimen by keeping the scalp in optimal condition. Our tester says his hair felt softer, fuller, and more hydrated, with less flaking and dryness over time.

Our tester says: “The shampoo lathers very nicely and a little bit goes a long way,” says Glamour reviewer Treg Hudson. “Though I haven’t noticed a difference in actual hair growth, the combination of shampoo and conditioner have improved my hair’s volume overall. I have a very sensitive, dry scalp and this has noticeably improved since using Nutrafol. The shampoo has a pleasant citrus scent that isn’t too overpowering.”

Key ingredients: Niacinamide, biotin, caffeine, salicylic acid, peppermint oil

Color-safe: No

Fragrance: Fresh, minty

  • What we love: Spa-like minty scent; gentle but effective cleanse; designed for noticeable thinning
  • Worth noting: Meant to be used as part of a three-step system; not formulated for color-treated hair

Nioxin offers four numbered systems, each designed for specific hair types and levels of thinning—and each including a thickening shampoo, conditioner, and scalp treatment. System 2 is best suited to natural, untreated hair with progressed thinning, while Systems 3 and 4 are formulated for color-treated, dry hair. The System 2 cleanser removes follicle-clogging sebum and debris to help reduce breakage and support fuller-looking strands. “Shampoos for thinning hair often focus on scalp stimulation and health, using ingredients like biotin, caffeine, and niacinamide to promote new hair growth,” says Thompson. All three ingredients are in this product’s formula to help strengthen hair at the root and maintain scalp health over time.

What our tester says: “The shampoo lathers well and smells like mint and eucalyptus—it honestly felt like I was at a spa,” says Glamour tester Steve Swartz, who used the shampoo in conjunction with its recommended System 2 conditioner and leave-in treatment. “After each use, my hair felt clean and fresh, and it worked well as part of the full Nioxin regimen, which I tried.”

Key ingredients: Saw palmetto

Color-safe: Yes

Fragrance: Woody, spicy

  • What we love: Plant-based DHT blocker; doesn’t weigh hair down; scent feels elevated but masculine
  • Worth noting: Weak lather; visible thickening results may take time

The hero ingredient in trendy shampoo brand Hims’s thickening shampoo is saw palmetto, a plant-derived ingredient that may help block DHT. The sulfate- and paraben-free formula works to remove sebum buildup that could interfere with new growth. Our tester says it left his hair softer, bouncier, and less frizzy than usual, with a scent that’s woodsy and fresh.

Our reviewer says: “After using this shampoo, my hair has more bounce and less pouf, which I like,” says Glamour reviewer Jared Grubow. “It feels clean and soft without feeling dry. I wouldn’t say it looks ‘fuller’ yet, but my wife—who never compliments my longer hair—has mentioned I’m having more ‘good hair days.’ The shampoo’s scent is woody like palo santo without being overpowering. My only real gripe is the lather; it’s on the weaker side, and I have to use more to get a full wash.”

Answers to FAQs

How we tested hair-loss shampoos for men

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

We consulted dermatologists, trichologists, and hairstylists to identify standout shampoos for thinning hair, then sent 12 of the most recommended options to a panel of male Glamour testers. Each participant used their assigned shampoo consistently for at least four weeks, following usage instructions and tracking any changes in shedding, scalp condition, and hair texture or volume. Testers had varying hair types, textures, and degrees of hair thinning, from mild to more advanced, and provided feedback on everything from fragrance and lather to whether they noticed more volumized strands over time. We also considered ingredient quality, price, and ease of incorporating the shampoo into a regular routine.

What causes hair loss in men?

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

The most common cause of thinning hair in men (and women) is androgenetic alopecia, or “pattern hair loss”—a hereditary condition triggered by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) attacking the follicle. “When this happens, the follicle starts to minimize and grow thinner and thinner hair, until it closes and the hair stops growing out of that follicle,” says Gretchen Friese, a certified trichologist at hair-restoration company BosleyMD. This can lead to a receding hairline or bald spots. Other contributing factors include stress, medications, illness, nutrient deficiencies, rapid weight loss, thyroid issues, and tight hairstyles. If you’re unsure what’s behind your shedding, a dermatologist can help identify the cause and recommend treatment.

Do men’s hair-loss shampoos work?

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

Hair-loss shampoos can’t regrow hair on their own, but they may improve the look and feel of thinning hair by supporting scalp health and reducing breakage. “They can assist in creating an optimal environment for the survival of existing hair follicles,” says Hardik Doshi, MD, FACS, double-board-certified lead surgeon at hair-restoration studio Ample. For actual regrowth, most experts recommend pairing shampoo with treatments like minoxidil or finasteride.

What’s best for male hair loss?

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“The proven ‘veteran’ formulas in the haircare arsenal involve the following: minoxidil, finasteride, ketoconazole shampoos, and biotin supplements,” says Dr. Doshi. Minoxidil is an FDA-approved topical treatment that can help stimulate hair growth, while finasteride is an oral prescription medication that works by blocking DHT, the hormone behind male pattern baldness.

Ketoconazole shampoos and biotin may also support hair health, but Dr. Doshi emphasizes that “they are not magic potions.” Instead, he recommends building a tailored treatment plan based on the root cause of your hair loss—something best done with a professional’s guidance.

What are the key ingredients in shampoos for hair loss?

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

These ingredients show up most often in shampoos for thinning hair and scalp support:

  • Minoxidil: An FDA-approved topical drug that stimulates hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp and reviving shrunken hair follicles. It’s the active ingredient in Rogaine and other hair-regrowth treatments, and is most effective in leave-on formulas like foams or serums. While some shampoos include minoxidil, rinse-off hair-care products likely won’t deliver the same benefits.
  • Finasteride: A prescription oral medication that blocks DHT. It’s not usually in shampoos, but it’s one of the most effective hair-loss treatments for men.
  • Ketoconazole: An antifungal that reduces dandruff and inflammation, and may support hair growth by improving scalp health.
  • Keratin: A protein found naturally in hair. It won’t regrow hair but can strengthen strands, reduce breakage, and make thinning hair look fuller.
  • Biotin (vitamin B7): Often added to shampoos and supplements to support keratin production and reduce breakage. Research on its role in regrowth is limited.
  • Caffeine: May energize hair follicles and increase circulation when massaged into the scalp. Clyde Haygood notes it can improve the look of thinning hair.
  • Saw Palmetto: A plant extract that may help block DHT at the scalp. More studies are needed.
  • Peppermint, tea tree, and rosemary oils: Essential oils that may boost circulation and soothe dryness, flaking, or irritation.
  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3): Supports circulation and skin barrier function, often used in calming or anti-inflammatory formulas.

How to choose a shampoo for hair loss

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

Start with your scalp. A healthy scalp is key to supporting hair growth. Look for shampoos that reduce dryness, soothe irritation, and gently cleanse without stripping natural oils.

Look for ingredients that maintain an environment for healthy hair to grow. Experts often recommend caffeine, saw palmetto, rosemary oil, ketoconazole, and tea tree oil—these may help improve circulation or reduce inflammation around the follicles.

Match your formula to your needs. If you have dandruff or scalp buildup, try ketoconazole or salicylic acid. If your scalp is dry or itchy, look for aloe vera, peppermint oil, or argan oil. If your hair is brittle or prone to breakage, choose strengthening ingredients like biotin or keratin.

Skip harsh additives. Avoid sulfates, drying alcohols, and heavy silicones—especially if your scalp is sensitive or prone to buildup.

Be realistic. Shampoo alone won’t regrow hair—but it can support a healthier scalp environment and improve the look and feel of thinning hair when used consistently.

How long does it take to see results?

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

Hair growth is a slow process, so it usually takes at least three to six months of consistent use to notice visible improvements. You might see reduced shedding or a fuller appearance before actual regrowth. If you don’t notice any change after six months, it’s worth checking in with a dermatologist to explore other options.
